Subject: How do I create a web page in FirstClass?
To:
First Class FAQ   First Class FAQ

[Q] Is there any way to set up a web page from a FirstClass account?  If so how does one do it?

Creating your home page
Documents that are placed in your home page will display properly on a standard web browser. These documents can include URL links.

You can include HTML documents in your home page. These documents appear as source code when created, but look like normal web pages when opened with a web browser.

To create your home page, choose File > Open > Home Page. A Home Page icon appears on your Desktop. You can only have one home page. You can rename or delete it, but do not move it off the Desktop. Your home page must stay on your Desktop to work properly.

Creating documents for your home page
To allow Internet users to access a file, you must place that file in your home page, or in a folder stored in your home page.

You can:
•drag and drop folders, documents, messages and URL links into your home page
•store shortcuts to conferences in your home page
The conferences will only be available to Internet users if your administrator has set up the conferences to allow this.
•Create a document containing the contents of a plain text file directly in your home page.
Open your home page, choose Edit > Insert > Insert File, select the file, then click Open. The file you select can contain HTML code. To pass raw HTML code to the web browser unaltered, so that it will render properly on the web, format the code by selecting it, then choosing Edit > Style > Literal HTML. If you view text formatted with this style in FirstClass, it is in the Fixedsys (Windows) or Monaco (Mac OS) font.

HTML Documents
An HTML document can include links to other documents in your home page, as well as graphics, as long as those graphics are stored in your home page.

You can create an HTML document to display as the default document for your home page. You must give this document one of the following names:
index.htm
index.html
home.htm
home.html
default.htm
default.html

Viewing others' home pages
If you are logged into a server, you can see the contents of a user's home page folder by choosing Conferencing > Directory, selecting the user, then clicking Home Page. Home page contents will look like plain text files when viewed this way rather than through a web browser.

Anyone with Internet access can use their web browser to view your home page. They just need to know your name and the name of your server.

The Meca Server name is fc.meca.edu

An Internet user must type your home page address in the following format:
http://fc.meca.edu/~login/ - or - http://fc.meca.edu/~alias/

For example, to see the page of Michael Doe who has a login of mdoe at fc.meca.edu an Internet user could type:
http://www.softarc.com/~mdoe/

Internet users who are unknown to your system are asked for authentication when they try to access a restricted conference from your home page.
